BillMonk: You Owe Me $

Today Boing Boing pointed me to an awesome new web service that is so damn useful i can’t even tell you enough to go join. BillMonk is a site that lets you track who owes who for what- it is a wet dream for us at the Beach Haus, because doing the math on bills between four people is crazy annoying. What you do is sign up (very basic info required) and have the people you owe/who owe you sign up too, and it tracks debts, loans, and possessions between you. It even does really crazy splitting math if you want:

As any experienced restauranteer can attest, it sounds so simple to say “Jill will cover for Joe, Bob will pay $10 more because he got the lobster, and Joey owes $3.50,” but calculating this frightening mess of shifting averages and combined totals is not just a nightmare, but is also demonstrably impossible. Or so said conventional wisdom. Our new money-math engine makes this sort of problem a thing of the past.

I signed up for it this morning, as did all of us at the Haus, and it is already easing the headache that is roommate math. Oh and Adam sent them an email asking if they planned to incorporate the ability to send payments to each other (via PayPal for instance), and this is their reply:

You’re absolutely right! The next logical step for BillMonk is to offer online payments. We are currently talking to various payment services providers to make sure that our users get a good rate, and a secure service. Hopefully we can get this wrapped up and on the site soon!

We eagerly await this feature. Until then, the Great Reckonings (the days we settle all the debts at the Haus) will hopefully be a thing of the past.
