Should We Buy This? (Pt.1)

September 6th, 2007 by Andy

So in October, Jess and I will be moving upstairs to the largest room in the house we live in. With this move comes our own bathroom, room for more furniture than just a bed, and hardwood floors (the carpets in our house are disgusting after 5 years, numerous parties, near constant filming, and a dog). We are currently planning the room out, and we have a few really great ideas for what we are going to do with the place, so I have decided to dedicate a small portion of my blogging to asking you guys what you think about different things we want to put in there. Basically we will be replacing all of the furniture we currently own with new stuff, and in the process will be building a bedroom/lounge, and I want your input and advice.

Item #1 on our list is a new bed. We want a platform bed, and we have seen some really great ones for all kinds of different prices, but here are the leading ideas right now:

Belize Bed

This Belize bed is nice but is definitely the most pricey of all of the options. We like the headboard style, and the solid wood construction is definitely a plus as well. But we also are leaning towards a darker stain on the wood of whichever bed we do get, and this one only comes in the above color. So due to price and color, we are leaning more towards a bed like this one:

Yosemite Bed

The Yosemite Bed is not bad at all; it is currently on sale, it is solid mahogany construction, and it looks like what we want. However Ikea (I know, I know, trust me we hate most of their stuff too, but there are some things there that aren’t awful) has an almost identical looking bed, for 1/2 the $ and we saw it in person and actually liked it:

ikea malm

This Malm bed is definitely the cheapest option, and looks kind of worse in this picture than it does in person. Apartment Therapy has some great comments on the bed, and you can get a headboard unit for it that features two side tables that roll out from the sides. Even if we do not get this Malm bed, we might still get the headboard unit becasue we really dig the design of it, and it would be invisible behind the headboard of the Yosemite bed or another like it.

So, dear readers, what do you think? Anyone have a different suggestion? What do you have/love/hate? This is going to be an ongoing series here on the blog, so chime in!

    Dear Andy,
Although it seems just “slightly” inappropriate for the mother of your girlfriend to weigh in on this decision, I couldn’t help myself. I love redecorating, and as Jessica will tell you, there is almost nothing I enjoy more than buying furniture. My personal favorite is the Malm bed, and not just because it’s the cheapest and Jessica’s father and I are paying for her college education, really truly, it’s not just that. I think the simple, clean lines will blend in with whatever future furniture decisions you make. It also looks incredibly comfortable to me, and I love the roll out side table feature. For what it’s worth…

i more than welcome your input! and i agree- i think the malm is a lock-in on this one due to both jess and i preferring it over anything else we have seen so far, but if anyone else out there has seen something better, please chime in.

this is going to be an ongoing series here on the blog, mostly because i think that everyone enjoys shopping vicariously (i know i do), and a lot of people like looking at good design, so why not leverage that and get some help to make the Sweet as good looking as possible.

you’re a fuckin idiot if you hate ikea stuff. it’s affordable and has appealing designs and will hold up…what else do you want? would a larger price tag help you come to terms with the fact that ikea is growing rapidly because it is the shit and everyone disagrees with you? Thank you!

actually, i bought the ikea bed, and i bought two ikea bookshelves to use as a chest of drawers. the issue with all 3 items is that, like 90% of what ikea makes, they are made with wood veneers rather than solid wood. every nick, scratch, and scrape is instantly deep and permanent. i like ikea for the price and design, i hate it for the construction quality. as long as you assemble each item in the room it will live in, and don’t ever try to move, ikea furniture will do very well for you. but in terms of longevity, it does not last as well as solid wood constructed items do.

    Andy,
How odd that all of a sudden I’m getting this comment from “general comment” regarding your furniture choices. I don’t think I’ve had anything show up in my inbox from your site in a very long time. I like your levelheaded response to the “ikea issue.” Here in Kansas, we have their counterpart- Nebraska Furniture Mart. Nebraska Furniture Mart is as you say about ikea, just fine as long as you know what you’re getting, which isn’t true quality, but has the illusion of quality. Sometimes the illusion of quality is just fine, again, as long as you know that’s all you’re getting. Jessica is familiar with “illusion quality” furniture, as that’s pretty much what she grew up with.

We were eventually able to buy “real quality” furniture, but still resort to the Nebraska Furniture Mart stuff now and then, especially since we no longer have two rambunctious (yes, she was) girls bopping about the house spilling soft drinks and flopping onto the sofa in clothes that had been used to ride a horse in.

As for “general comment” I have two words: anger management. It’s just furniture dude.

the way this blog handles comments is that it emails anyone who has commented on a post when anyone adds a new comment, sometimes people like this find older posts on google and feel mad enough to weigh in on something that is kind of old news. so really, i doubt they will even read these responses, but oh well.

i kind of wish i had known about west elm before we bought the ikea bed- for about 20% more we could have had a solid wood with identical if not superior design. oh well, next time i guess. as soon as i move the current bed will fall apart anyways so lesson learned on veneers.

I checked out west elm. They do have beautifully designed furniture. I used be strictly into antiques and oriental rugs, but the older I get, the more I’m drawn to contemporary design with clean, simple lines. As long as there is not too much chrome- too much chrome reminds me of an Austin Powers movie. However, I didn’t see any west elm furniture that crossed the line into 60’s retro tacky.
