The Obameter
February 8th, 2009 by Sam|
Now that Obama is officially president, we can finally stop focusing on how much Bush screwed up this country, and keep an eye on whether or not Obama is screwing up the country. Sure, it’s been less than a month, and sure, I’m pretty confident that Obama will do a better job with this country than Bush did, but that doesn’t mean it’s all smooth sailing from here. While the right wing pundits are accusing every left winger of believing Obama is some kind of Massiah, for the most part, I just figured he was far more likely to put this country back on course than the other guy. Now that he’s president, though, It’s time to make sure he actually follows up on those campaign promises. To that end, the St Petersburg Times in Florida created the Obameter. This website cataloged 500 Obama campaign promises, and will be following each one of them. The promises will be categorized as “promise kept”, “promise broken”, “compromise”, “stalled” or “in the works”. The page also has a handy RSS feed that delivers all of the recent changes to the meter. As you’d expect, I’m not 100% happy with the results (the five day window on bill-signing and lobbyist waivers come to mind), but I’ll be pleasantly surprised if 100 or less of these items will be marked as “promise broken” when all is said and done. So it goes. |

I recognize that with high expectations, there is heightened scrutiny. It’s not as if most people really expected much of Dubya, someone who had their finger on the nuclear button, but couldn’t even pronounce the word correctly. However, I find the intensity of criticism of Obama, with all of a few weeks into office, really annoying. While Republican commentators and politicians are screaming about the inevitable failure of the stimulus package (all of a sudden Republicans are interested in “fiscal responsibility?”) people are getting laid off, losing their homes and filing for bankruptcy. For God’s sake, at least he’s doing SOMETHING!
I’m curious, where was the St. Petersburg Times when we were promised we were getting a “uniter, not a divider?” Since after that promise, we alienated pretty much the entire world, I would say that would have to go in the “promises unkept” list. What’s with the double standard? It’s okay for Republicans to trash our economy, send over three thousand American soldiers to their death (thousands more are disabled and suffer lifelong injuries) and turn a budget surplus into trillions of dollars of debt. However, we’re going to scrutinize every single campaign promise of Obama and by God he better not screw up one little thing!
I’m not the least bit interested in how Obama comes out in the St. Petersburg Times’ little “promises” index. My husband had to go to work on Friday and tell five people they just lost their jobs. It took Bush eight years to send this country into economic disaster. Obama is being criticized after a few weeks. By the way, he repeatedly stated during his campaign that there is no easy fix to the catastrophic situation we now find ourselves in. I do hope the St. Petersburg Times makes note of that.

Great! It is so arduous search out good quality data on the web immediately from knowledgeable sources, it’s all wannabe’s and reused content material with only some exceptions. I hope you keep up the good work and I in all probability back to read more of your posts sooner or later!
