Updating… Updating…. To Wordpress 2.5!

April 2nd, 2008 by Andy

We are in the process of updating around here to Wordpress 2.5, and this is the first post under the new admin. I would like to join the wide chorus of voices singing this major update’s praises- there are a ton of great new things under the hood. If you run a blog on Wordpress, consider upgrading, the improvements are instantly worth it. So far I love almost too much to post about, but a special nod to the improved plugin handling is more than warranted. So far adding and tweaking plugins has been easy and pain free, and I am sure the new system will be much better at helping everyone keep up to date on plugin patches and updates.

For you, the visitor, things are mostly the same, but two things deserve a moment of your attention. The first is the addition of Gravatars, if you don’t have one, consider getting one. I posted here that we might add this functionality, and now, well, now we have. If you want your comment to have a cool little icon (and not just on our site, on millions of others using the plugin), go take a few minutes to set up your account. It is not jsut eye candy, it actually makes commenting around the internets easier. The second thing you may want to check out, because it is also awesome, is on any post that you have commented on, you will see “Manage Your Subscriptions” down at the bottom below the new comment box. Click that and you will see a pretty interface that lets you add, remove, or just look at all of the posts that you are subscribed to. It is peachy-keen.

We are still tweaking a LOT of things, so there will be new features for you to enjoy soon enough; worry not dear readers. If you have any suggestions, now’s the time…

I’m still Gravatar free. For the life of me I can’t explain my aversion to it, but I’ll concede it’s a clever idea.

I’m hoping your upgrade went as smoothly as my own (a shock, considering how thoroughly I’ve hacked WP to make it do what I used to be able to do via Expression Engine), and like you I’m mostly impressed with their changes.

    My nitpicks…

Wordpress needs to high a designer. A good one. The control panel design is still just UGGO.

Speaking of, the moron that threw the category list below the post entry box needs a good crotch punching. That’s just stupid.

I’m not keen on WP forcing it’s own class attribute into my images, but if that’s what I have to put up with for a smarter media inserter, than so be it.

And for Buddha’s sake, Wordpress… add a ‘title’ and ‘target’ box to the link entry system for code view.

    Ahem.

Andy, we so need to do a ‘Plugins that Rule’ cross post.

the admin is assy, but better than before, and now anyone can design an admin theme as a plugin, so expect about 1.26Million admin theme plugins to sort through in about 3..2..1… now.

This post went out at first uncategorized due to the stupid repositioning of the categories box and me being all a twitter about the new admin interface and some new plugins. we should be able to rearrange the write panel at will, ajax style. and who put the save and publish buttons so close together? there’s room in that box they are in, add some space homies, give me room to breathe!

i’m down to do the plugins that rule post whenever you are- can i get a “what what” for subscribe to comments?!!

    cforms II
    Customizable Post Listings
    FeedBurner FeedSmith
Get Recent Comments (super handy for keeping up on trolls)
    Google XML Sitemaps (very nice)
Inbetweens (handles my inbetween post ads)
reCAPTCHA (cause I’m down with lit)

Remote Authentication (custom job we built for some cross-site functions)
Simple Trackback Validation (Once again, good on you, Andy)
StatPress (Hands down the single best stats package I’ve seen for WP)

want for me to compile your comment here with a list of the ones we use too and draft it up over on TB? we can then both tweak it and publish there, and i’ll link to it from here.
